Field orientation

Know the route. Read the terrain.

This celebrated circuit wraps around the Maroon Bells through the Elk Mountains, crossing four passes above 12,000 feet. Alpine lakes, wildflower basins, aspen forest, and long views arrive between demanding climbs. Most backpackers allow three to four days for the route.

BEFORE YOU GO

Overnight permits are required. Expect fast-changing alpine weather, high elevation, and busy trailheads.

Verify current conditions

Closures, permits, weather, water, access, and regulations can change. Use the official land-manager source before every trip.

Lesson from the terrain

Progress is not always linear.

Four high passes demand rhythm, recovery, and constant weather awareness. The crew succeeds by adapting the day while protecting the expedition’s intent.
